Timing is set at 10 degrees Before Top Dead Center (BTDC). Shame on the shop for not verifying that the vacuum advance was working on a vacuum advance only distributor. The vehicle does not have to be moving or under load. Unless the nipple at the carburetor is closed off the carburetor will draw vacuum as you increase rpm's. If the distributor has recently been serviced- sounds like it has, the vacuum canister "ist kaput". In that case it's impossible to check advance whilst revving engine.ĭon't really understand the mechanics of this, if anyone could explain I'd appreciate. I have heard that you won't get any advance on a vacuum distributor if you rev up the engine whilst stationary. If it does, then you have a carb vacuum issue.Ī photo of your carb and the nipple the hose connects to will help. If it does, suck on it and put your tongue over the end of the hose, and see if it holds vacuum. Does the plate rotate? If not, it's the distributor mechanism, probably dry or worn. Take the cap off the distributor, and suck on the hose to the can. Time it statically like the Muir book says. Posted: Fri 8:34 am Post subject: Re: Timing issues vacuum advance So the bottom line is, how do I time the engine with the big cap distributor?!

Does the car need to be moving / under load for the carb to create a vacuum to advance the timing? I notice there is a lot more smoke from the exhaust when I increase the revs, not sure if this is related. Both rebuilt and tested by reputable workshops so shouldn't be anything wrong with parts.Īt idle this runs smoothly but when I open the throttle the timing doesn't change (when checked with a strobe). I have a 1200 stock engine with a reconditioned 'big cap' distributor (vacuum only) and reconditioned solex 28 pict 1 carb.
